Tree Removal Cost in Zionsville, IN

Published estimates put a typical single-tree removal in the Indianapolis area at roughly $400 to $1,200, with small trees under 30 feet starting near $150 to $500 and large trees over 60 feet running $800 to $2,000 or more (Angi, HomeAdvisor, Lawn Love, 2025 to 2026). Stump grinding, crane work and emergency calls are extra. Zionsville Tree Service does not set prices; the figures below are published national and regional estimates, and the tree company's written estimate after seeing the tree is the real number.

What drives the price

Tree companies price a removal on labor hours and equipment, and five things decide both.

  • Height. The biggest factor. Lawn Love (October 2026) lists $285 to $435 for trees up to 30 feet, $435 to $870 for 30 to 60 feet, $870 to $1,160 for 60 to 80 feet and $1,160 to $2,000 above 80 feet, or about $9.50 to $14.50 per foot. LawnStarter (October 2026) gives a similar $10 to $14 per foot. The mature oaks and sycamores on older Zionsville lots are commonly 60 feet and up.
  • Trunk diameter and species. A thick trunk means more cuts, heavier pieces and more hauling, and dense hardwoods such as oak take longer than a soft maple of the same height. LawnStarter's averages by species run from $775 for an oak to $1,150 for a large maple.
  • Access. A tree the bucket truck can park beside is the cheap case. One behind the house, inside a fence or on a slope has to be climbed and carried out in pieces; Angi's Indianapolis guide adds 25 to 50 percent for difficult access.
  • Proximity to structures and lines. A tree over the roof, a neighbor's garage or a Duke Energy service drop cannot be felled in one piece. The crew rigs each section down on ropes, which can double the labor.
  • Crane. When there is no room to rig, a crane lifts sections over the house. Published guides put crane rental with an operator at roughly $1,200 to $6,000 on top of labor. Companies use cranes more often on dead ash, which is unsafe to climb.

Trimming versus removal

Trimming is usually the cheaper option and the right one for a healthy tree with a few problem limbs. LawnStarter lists $315 to $700 per tree and Lawn Love $255 to $655, scaling with height the same way removal does. Removal makes sense when the tree is dead, structurally failing, too close to the foundation or, for ash, past the point where treatment works.

Stumps, wood and cleanup

A removal estimate often ends at ground level. Stump grinding is a separate line, $158 to $450 at LawnStarter and $180 to $525 for stump removal at Lawn Love; HomeAdvisor describes $2 to $5 per inch of stump diameter with a minimum charge, and Angi's Indianapolis page averages about $276. Hauling or chipping the wood is also itemized, roughly $50 to $125 in LawnStarter's guide, and many companies will leave logs cut for firewood at a lower price.

Storm and emergency premiums

After a wind event like April 2, 2025, when gusts topped 80 mph across central Indiana and the National Weather Service logged trees down across Hendricks, Marion and Hamilton counties, every crew in the metro is booked. Emergency removal, meaning a tree on a roof or driveway that has to come off today, runs $450 to $3,000 in Lawn Love's guide, and after-hours work costs more again. The opposite case is cheaper: a tree already on the ground in open yard can be $85 to $300 to cut up and haul (LawnStarter).

Insurance, permits and power lines

Homeowner policies commonly cover removing a tree that fell on a covered structure, up to a limit, and generally do not cover a tree that fell in the yard. Photograph the damage before any cutting, call your insurer, and ask the tree company for an invoice that separates hazard work from cleanup. Zionsville does not, to our knowledge, require a permit for removing a tree on a private lot, but trees in the strip between sidewalk and curb belong to the town (Town of Zionsville FAQ), so report those to Public Works instead. If the tree touches the line from the pole to your meter, Duke Energy will disconnect that service drop at no charge so the crew can work; trees in the main lines along the street are Duke's vegetation crews' job. Call 811 before any stump grinding.

Questions to ask before you accept an estimate

  • Does the price include stump grinding, wood removal and cleanup?
  • Will the tree be climbed, bucketed or craned, and is equipment going on the lawn?
  • Can you show proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation? Ask for the certificate.
  • Who calls Duke Energy or 811 if needed?
  • Is this an oak, and can the work wait for the dormant season?
  • Is the estimate in writing, and how long is it good for?
